Swipe Hallelujah · Effective date: 16 October 2026

Swipe Hallelujah is a Bible reader that runs on your phone. This policy describes what the app does with information. The verse, favorites, and settings stay on the phone. One optional button can send an anonymous count.

What stays on your phone

The World English Bible is included in the app. Other translations are downloaded only when you ask, and then stored on the device. Your current verse, reading position, theme, favorites, and settings are stored on the device. On Android that is app storage. On iOS it is an app-group store shared with the Swipe Hallelujah widget so the widget and the app show the same verse. None of that is sent to the developer or to any other server.

A translation download requests that one public file. It does not send your verse, favorites, or settings. After the file is saved, reading does not need a connection. If the file is missing, the app uses the World English Bible.

If you mark a first prayer, the date stays on this phone. It is not uploaded. You can view, change, or clear that date in Settings. The app can remind you at 9:00 on that date next year with a local notification. Clearing the date cancels that reminder.

The anonymous prayer count

The screen titled “A prayer” has a button, “I prayed this prayer for the first time today.” Tapping it is optional. If you tap it, the app sends two things over HTTPS to Google Cloud Firestore:

  • A random install id created on this phone. It is not your name, not an advertising id, and not a hardware id.
  • The fact that this install currently counts as one first prayer (prayed), or that the tap was undone (undo).

The message does not include your name, email, the verse on screen, favorites, settings, or the born-again date.

Each install counts once. Tapping the button again does not add another count. “I tapped this by accident,” on the celebration screen or in Settings next to the born-again date, removes this install from the net count and records an undo. The anonymous document remains, with the count turned off, so the same install is not added twice. A later first-prayer tap on that same install can count again.

The developer uses the totals to see how many installs currently have an active decision. The count is not used for advertising, and it is not sold or shared with data brokers. Google hosts the database because that is where the count is stored.

Until a Firebase project is configured in the app, the button still saves the date on the phone and does not contact a server. A later version that includes the project sends the pending count the next time the app opens.

What the app does not do

  • It does not create an account.
  • It does not ask for your name, email, phone number, contacts, photos, or location.
  • It does not use advertising or crash-reporting services.
  • It does not use tracking, and it does not link this count with other apps or companies.
  • Reading scripture does not need the internet. A connection is used while you download a translation, and, only after you tap the first-prayer button, to send the anonymous count. A debug build used by a developer may also use the network so Flutter can reload code. The app still does not upload your verses.

Sharing

Share uses the share sheet provided by Android or iOS. Swipe Hallelujah hands the verse text to that sheet only after you tap Share. Where it goes next is up to you and the app you pick. Swipe Hallelujah does not receive a copy back.

Permissions

Android may ask for:

  • Notifications, so a verse-gate reminder, the “turn off” action, and the optional yearly prayer reminder can be shown. The yearly reminder is requested only after you tap the first-prayer button. The verse gate and the lock-screen card still ask only if you enable them.
  • Display over other apps, so the optional verse gate or lock-screen card can appear after you unlock. The app works without this. If it is not allowed, Swipe Hallelujah shows a notification instead.
  • Alarms, only so a verse interval shorter than 15 minutes can be more precise. If you do not allow it, the verse still changes, on Android's less precise schedule. The yearly reminder uses an inexact alarm and does not need that permission.
  • Run at startup, so a schedule you already turned on can continue after a reboot.

iOS asks for notification permission only after a first prayer is marked, so the yearly reminder can be scheduled. The widget and the app share the verse through an app group on the device. The widget does not send the prayer count.

Children

Swipe Hallelujah does not ask for anyone’s name, including a child’s. The optional prayer count is an anonymous id and the fact of a tap. It is not a profile.

Deletion

Uninstalling the app removes the verse, the born-again date, and the install id from the phone. Undo removes this phone from the net count. The anonymous document is still stored with the count turned off.

To ask for that document to be deleted, write to cjbaldwinson@gmail.com and include the anonymous id shown in Settings under Born again. That id is the only way to find the document. There is no name on it.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new text will be posted at the same URL, with a new effective date.

The “Get one email when Swipe Hallelujah launches” form does not send anything yet. When it is connected to a mailing-list service, it will send only the email address you type, use it for one launch announcement, and this page will name the service before the form goes live.
